This latest release of the Apple Installer includes revised documentation for Installer version 3.2, and the new Installer version 3.3.
Installer version 3.3 was developed to implement the Font Family Resource Atom as a new mechanism for installing fonts. One of the benefits of the new resource is to facilitate the installation of font resources which are too large to fit on a single floppy disk. In addition, some bug fixes have been implemented. See the “Installer 3.3 Readme File”, for a description of these changes and fixes.
Installer 3.3 has been extensively tested, however, the MPW ScriptCheck tool has not been updated to recognize the new Font Family Resource Atom. As a result, some manual interaction is required for a version 3.3 script to be correctly handled by Installer.
If your process does not include the installation of font resources, Installer version 3.3 can be used with minimal changes to your script. You'll need to modify the file and creator type of the script resource file to 'bbkr'. In addition, you must update the 'invs' (required Installer version) if your script uses this feature. If font resources are part of your installation, a sample script is provided to demonstrate a means for implementing this resource.
Due to the ease of using ScriptCheck, the Apple System Software group recommends you use Installer 3.2, unless you need to install very large fonts, or you need one of the bug fixes provided by Installer 3.3 (see the “Installer 3.3 Readme File”).
